Anticipating low supplies at launch for the hybrid version of the Chevy Malibu, Chevrolet will limit early distribution of the cars to only 11 key U.S. markets in the Northeast and the West Coast, with none in the Southeast, Deep South or Midwest.
There will not be standard distribution, of the gasoline-electric hybrid, said Jim Brown, Malibu product manager, at a press presentation for the redesigned 2008 Malibu in New York on Thursday.
There is a limited number (of hybrids), we dont want them in low-volume dealerships where they will sit for a long time, he said.
The conventional model of the all-new Malibu debuted last month. The 2008 Malibu hybrid bows in January. But it could take until the 2009 model year next fall, for supplies of the hybrid Malibu to reach dealers nationwide, said Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan.
