Comments by AutoWeek editorial staffers on a car that’s been in our fleet:
EDITORIAL ASSISTANT JONATHAN WONG: Infiniti did a great job redoing its G coupe. Besides sporting a good-looking wrapper with a wider, more hunkered-down stance, the new 3.7-liter V6 features a healthy horsepower boost (37 more in manual models and 55 more in automatics) over the previous 3.5-liter, better fuel economy, according to Infiniti, and a deep growl when motoring along.
This is my first experience with the automatic G37, and I didnt come away too disappointed. The unit provides smooth and quick shifts and is decent when you decide to select gears yourself. Of course, you should still go with the six-speed if you want to wring out as much fun as possible, but if youre stuck in traffic often, the auto does a fine job.
There is good bite around corners, but you wont call it light on its feet, because this coupe tips the scale at more than 3600 pounds. Rear-wheel drive and 330 hp do a nice job of rotating the car around a turn, though. Steering provides good, confident feedback, and the brakes are up to snuff.
Inside, there is a huge improvement over the outgoing car, with very attractive and easy-to-navigate surroundings, comfortable leather seats and a solid build. A few radio buttons could stand to be a bit bigger, but overall I give the cabin a thumbs up.
I did go shopping with it last night, only to discover it has a very shallow trunk. It is pretty wide, though, so a weeks worth of groceries mostly fit in there, with only a couple of items finding their way into the back seat.
