Toyota still has plenty to prove in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series, but its strong showing in preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway was encouraging.
Camry drivers Jacques Villeneuve (Bill Davis Racing), J.J. Yeley (Hall of Fame Racing) and Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing) were among the fastest in the three-day, six-run test that ended following afternoon runs on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Overall, though, Hendrick Motorsports drivers once again were the class of the field. Chevrolet teammates Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears were 1-2 in Monday morning’s single-car runs, then 1-2 again in Monday afternoon’s drafting session.
Johnson and Villeneuve were 1-2 in Tuesday morning’s single-car runs, but Yeley and Busch were 1-2 in the afternoon drafting session. The first round of testing ended on Wednesday, when Busch and fellow Toyota driver A.J. Allmendinger were 1-2 in the morning and Busch and Ford driver Matt Kenseth were 1-2 in the afternoon.
The Jan. 7-9 test was for Cup teams that occupied odd-numbered owner points positions midway through the 2007 season: 1, 3, 5, etc. Teams that were in even-numbered positions midway through last season–including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick–will test Jan. 14-16.
