OUR TAKE: This is a huge step forward for the General, which, while still making a few bummers (the Pontiac Torrent comes immediately to mind), is on a bit of a roll lately. The car looks nice and stylish outside, and the interior is superbly done with vastly improved materials. There’s good power from this V6 (especially once you get the tach needle up over 4000 revs) and the thing is reasonably fast. This is one smooth engine-tranny combo–you can see why the likes of BMW buys this transmission.
The body stays tightly controlled, but the ride never feels too hard. It’s a heck of a lot more comfortable a ride than a 3 Series on its awful runflats, and thankfully not as mushy as many Lexi we’ve driven lately.
The car stays relatively flat through fast corners and the suspension does a great job of soaking up roadway bumps. Steering has a nice weighty feel and features quick reflexes.
BOTTOM LINE: We can even see the CTS picking up a few 3 Series buyers, if not the hardcore enthusiasts, but the ones looking for a comfortable luxury sedan with athletic traits.
