OUR TAKE: With all of the other SUV choices out there, it’s easy to forget about one of the forefathers, but sales for the Explorer brand show that it’s still a player in the SUV market. And just like its sales, this ute is steady and dependable with few surprises.
The interior is clean and straightforward, the ride is trucky but not objectionable, fuel mileage is okay for a ute, and the cabin is comfortable. Some of the materials inside look and feel cheap, and some of the controls are in weird places, though one of its best features is the power seats in the way-back. Those couldn’t be easier to operate.
Having said that, we couldn’t have asked for a better snowmobile this weekend. The 4×4 system has auto, high and low modes. Occasionally we put it in 4×4 high but mostly just left it in auto. No muss no fuss.
Seems a bit pricey at $38 large, but this had the full Cleveland effect with all the bells and whistles. The base price seems a bit more reasonable.
The Sync system is the newest addition to the interior, and after spending much of the weekend playing with its voice recognition, we came away thinking it’s just like having a kid: You tell it what you want it to do, and most of the time it does what it wants.
The voice recognition does work better after you turn off the air conditioning and quiet the real kids down, but the optimal situation seems to be sitting still with only you in the car and nothing on but the engine.
